Walnut Creek, CA – Jan. 21, 2026: CCTA has secured nearly $15 million in Last Mile Federal Funding Account grants approved by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) to expand reliable, high-speed broadband access across Contra Costa County.
Through two countywide projects, CCTA will:
- Expand broadband infrastructure in West Contra Costa County ($4,534,294) and East Contra Costa County ($10,401,262)
- Reach an estimated 1,459 unserved locations and benefit approximately 62,860 residents
- Advance connectivity that supports education, healthcare access, public safety, remote work, and economic opportunity
“This investment will ensure Contra Costa County residents have the reliable broadband access they need to fully participate in today’s economy,” said Tim Haile, Executive Director of CCTA. “By expanding last-mile infrastructure, we’re helping close long-standing connectivity gaps and ensuring more households can access education, healthcare, and job opportunities.”
Why CCTA? As transportation continues to innovate, broadband is now core transportation infrastructure. CCTA is leveraging the same fiber networks and corridors used for transportation projects to expand countywide connectivity.
These investments will also support CCTA’s Smart Signals program, which is upgrading more than 300 intersections across the region to improve traffic flow, safety, and real-time operations. Initial Smart Signals upgrades are expected to begin later this year in communities such as Danville and Concord, with additional countywide projects to follow.
By coordinating broadband and transportation infrastructure together, CCTA is ensuring these investments deliver long-term value across multiple systems.
